This is a Garrett 7HP Agricultural engine in 4" scale.
Progress has been very spasmodic and slow. I'm working towards getting the
boiler re-tested, I just need to make the manhole clamps but I'm constantly side
tracked! The back wheel hubs are ready for milling, the foundry for casting the
gears is well underway and my locomotive, an 0-4-2 similar to Wren, is in the
early stages and in need of casting to get the chassis rolling.
Edward Thomas, 0-4-2, based on the Tallyllyn (ex-Corris) loco in 7 1/4
gauge,
as it stands May 2008 and has done for the last four years, a familiar
story to others I'm sure.
The basic frames are complete and waiting for horns, axle boxes and wheels,
hence the need for the foundry!
In the last couple of months I've started on the patterns and more recently
on the main springs. Its surprising how many bits there are in leaf spring
suspension.
Pictures of the foundry in operation will be added later and should prove
interesting. First firing is expected in six to eight weeks but don't hold your
breath - timescales have a habit of slipping. The first furnace is a coke fired
forced draft crucible furnace but I'm also constructing a small cupola furnace
with a theoretical maximum tap of 25 lbs of iron every five to eight minutes. We
shall see!
Edward Thomas 1st June. Over the last few weeks I've been working on parts which
fit directly on the frames whilst they are still light enough to swing round.
The main suspension is complete, all seventy two components and various brackets
for the brakes. It seems strange to have brakes before wheels but there is some
rationality to this and 'all bits count'. More brackets to follow this month
then on with the furnace for casting horns and axleboxes.
